We have engaged with the government, schools,public hospitals and private institutions in tree planting activities along the River Nzoia with a focus on indegenous trees. We have set tree nurseries to cater for the availability of tree in our initiatives.
We started the one learner three trees iniative that seeks to raise environmental conservation awareness in school going learners. The initiative aims to have learners take care of their planted trees in all their school going year at that given school.When a learner gets to understand the importance of tree and actually take care of it through the years, they will be able to perpetuate the same behaviours in their lifetime as conservation ideals will be set in their life early.
We have engaged with government officials and government insitutions to plant tree on River nzoia river bank to reduce erosion and create the forest cover.This program aligns well with the government reafforestation efforts. The program is highly incentivised such that farmers whose farms border the river will be given a bee hive to do bee farming. Tree growin takes and majority of the farmers are not inclined to wait for the long time so as to harvest wood or the tree itself. With this in mind, we made the bee hives such that on each farm along the river that plants and maintains the tree they are given a hive. Long run on the short term gain, the farmers are able to gain capital from honey sales. The goal remains tree planting.
We have also engaged with household at poverty line that have land to plant fruit trees. Within few years, they will have an income source. Our target major fruit tree is ovacadoes. The fruit tree planting program is also extended to the women. Engaging women within the program allows them to have capital gain.With the added income steam they can be able to provide for their children and self sustain.
